Roslin

Roslin

(Midlothian)

The earlier spelling of Rosslyn derives from Ross - rock, and Lynn - waterfall.

The original village served Roslin Castle and expanded in the 1800s as a mining village. The mines are no longer functioning. Located 6 miles south of Edinburgh, the main tourist attraction is Rosslyn Chapel which featured in both the book and the film "The DaVinci Code". This resulted in the Chapel becoming one of Scotland's "must see" visitor sites.

The Chapel dates from the 1400s and was built by the St.Clair family of the adjacent Roslin Castle (1300s). Though partially ruined, a surviving portion of the castle can be rented as a self-catering holiday house.

These two buildings are on the edge of Roslin Glen which offers spectacular woodland walks, one of which explores the interesting ruins of a gunpowder factory (in production during the Napoleonic Wars).

Roslin and surrounds can accommodate visitors and holiday-makers with a choice of several hotels, self-catering cottages and a campsite. It is also popular with day-trippers from Edinburgh and beyond.
