Penicuik Sports Centre

Situated 9 miles south-west of Edinburgh, Penicuik derives its name from "the hill of the cuckoo".
The town centre is a picturesque tree lined street with many fine buildings - some dating from 1700s. St.Kentigern's Church, the Town Hall and the Parish Church with its "Doric" columns are examples. The town prospered first from mills on the North Esk River and later from coal mining, both industries now being defunct.
In and around the town are several pub and hotels and there is a new sports centre on the north edge of the community. Tourists can access an off-road walk/cycle track which begins in Penicuik and carries on through beautiful countryside all the way to the sea at Musselburgh, some 20 miles distant.
Penicuik House, the home of Sir John Clark, is currently developing a visitor centre on the Penicuik Estate highlighting the now ruined Palladian mansion house.
The town also has connections with Robert Louis Stevenson.
