Newtongrange

Newtongrange

(Midlothian)

A former mining village became Scotland's largest in the 1890s with the opening of the Lady Victoria Colliery. This mine ceased production in 1981 but now houses the 5 star visitor attraction of the Scottish Mining Museum - an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. A nostalgic visit for the older generation and a fun "hands-on" experience for the children.

At its height almost every building in the village belonged to the mining company, and, curiously, the streets are given numbers (e.g. Ninth Street) instead of names.

Newtongrange is noted for its annual "Brass in the Park" event where scores of visiting bands from far and near play live over three days.
