A beautiful 16th century parish church with a rich history. It is believed that a church, originally known as St Cuthbert's, has existed on this site since 1150.

However it was not until 1526, when Peter Sandilands had become Rector, that the building of the Kirk as we know it today began. The Choir and vestry were completed in 1560, along with a lean-to school, which has long since dissapeared. This early conception of the Kirk served the local community for around 300 years, until 1863, when North and South transepts were added to accommodate a growing congregation.
Peter Sandilands vision for the new Church was not his only contribution to the legacy of the Kirk of Calder. His enthusiasm for the reformation meant that the famous John Knox became a regular preacher in the new church.

The Kirks history is not without controversy, as during the mid-17th century, the Minister of the time - Huw Kennedy - supported the witch-hunt movement, which saw several burnings in MidCalder as a result.

Recently restored, the Kirk won the West Lothian Award for Conservation in 1992. John Knox, James Paraffin Young, David Livingstone and Frederick Chopin have already visited here we look forward to meeting you too!
